The Oxford dictionary announced its Word of the Year, TASS reported, citing a press release from the university publishing house.

The expression "goblin mode", which means "an unusual pattern of behavior that rejects societal norms and expectations", is the Word of the Year.

The phrase was first used on Twitter in 2009. Its widespread use began in February 2022. Then "goblin mode" hit the headlines of newspapers and magazines.

The lifting of restrictions introduced by various governments in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic is also helping to spread the word.

"It is possible that the popularity of the expression reflects sentiments inherent in people in relation to the so-called

return to normal life," the publisher's announcement also states.

In second place in the Word of the Year ranking is "metaverse".

In third place is the hashtag #"I'm with" ("#IStandWith").
