Jonathan, the world's oldest tortoise, celebrated his 190th birthday on the British island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean along with local people who celebrated the holiday on Friday, BTA reports.

"Think about it, if it was born in 1832, my God, how much the world has changed since then," said Joe Hollins, a retired veterinarian on the island who cared for the tortoise.

"World wars, the rise and fall of the British Empire, governors, kings and queens who succeeded each other, it's so amazing," he said.

Jonathan, who is at least 190 years old, is the oldest known tortoise and the oldest known land-dwelling animal.

It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

The turtle has lived since 1882 on the island and its age is not exactly known.

A photo recording its arrival on the island indicates that the animal was already at least 50 years old when it arrived.

Now he lives in the governor's residence along with three other turtles - David, Emma and Fred.

The islanders organized three days of celebrations for Jonathan's birthday.

On Saturday he will be offered his favorite vegetables, and on Sunday there will be cake.

A special postage stamp was validated on the island in honor of the holiday.

The turtle is now on the five-cent coin and immigration stamps.
