The Taipei Planetarium pointed out that there are wonderful astronomical wonders to look forward to every week in December!

The "Mars Opposition", which first appeared on December 8 (Thursday), reappeared after 26 months. It is the time when Mars is closest and brightest to the earth, and the apparent diameter of Mars in the next ten years will be smaller than this time. The next time we'll see Mars bigger than this year's will be in 2033.

The special exhibition room of the Taipei Planetarium also exhibits a detailed introduction about this Mars opposition free of charge, and will be open for the public to enjoy the mars opposition from 17:00 to 21:00 on the day of the Mars opposition on December 8. The Youtube channel of the Planetarium will also open Live broadcast will be held from 19:30 to 20:30.

Then there will be a meteor feast on the evening of December 14 (Wednesday). The Geminid meteor swarm will reach a maximum size and the largest number. It can be viewed with the naked eye in a place with less light pollution and a wide field of vision.

On December 21 (Wednesday), Mercury's "East Distance" is also a good time to observe Mercury in the near future!

According to the planetarium, among the planets visible to the naked eye, Mercury is covered by strong light because its position is closest to the sun, and it is easier to see only at the "large distance" with the largest distance angle from the sun.

Moreover, among the seven long distances this year, the observation conditions for the two long distances in this year and January are the best, because the long distances in the east appear at low altitudes in the west after sunset, which is easier to watch than the dawn at the long distances in the west. The brightness of Mercury reached the rare -0.6 magnitude during these two times when Mercury was at its greatest distance to the east, and the altitude at sunset was 16 degrees, which was greater than other times.

The planetarium recommends that as long as the weather is good, you can try to look for this white bright spot of Mercury with the naked eye at a low altitude in the west after sunset for a few days before and after the 21st. The mysterious planet that can be seen!

In addition, the Taipei Planetarium also announced that the last ray of sunshine in Taiwan this year will leave at 17:31 on December 31 from the 3,000-meter-high Beidawu Mountain, marking a perfect end to the 2022 astronomical phenomenon.
