The GOVERNMENT has warned against the misuse of antibiotic medicines which cause resistance of parasites to the medicine, warning of the risk of serious consequences especially death for users.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Tumaini Nagu said in Dar es Salaam that statistics show that 92 percent of antibiotics used in the country have caused 59.8 percent of infections.

He said the most affected area is fishing and breeding where 90 percent of the drugs are used to treat animals instead of vaccination.

"We have developed a new national action plan to combat the resistance of parasites to drugs," said Professor Nagu.

"We expect to receive information on the implementation of the national work plan for the year 2017-2022."

Tanzania is facing the resistance of parasites to drugs, a problem that has continued to flourish in countries south of the Sahara desert.
