Specialists from the Canadian Institute for Population Health Research have found that drinking beer significantly increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, writes the journal "Neurobiology".

For the purposes of the study, experts studied the eating habits of 26,000 people.

The results showed that alcohol in general increased the risk of cerebral hemorrhage by 50 percent.

However, this figure differs depending on the type of alcohol consumed.

Five alcoholic drinks a month increased the risk of ischemic stroke by 29 percent and of hemorrhagic stroke by 76 percent.

Five shots of alcohol equal, for example, five shots of vodka or two and a half pints of beer.

Alcohol goes up in price again

According to researchers, beer is the most harmful alcoholic drink for the brain.

Its consumption increases the risk of ischemic stroke by 21 percent and of hemorrhagic stroke by 73 percent.

Wine, on the other hand, has no effect on brain functions and the health of the organ as a whole.

However, scientists emphasize that alcohol, regardless of its type, should be consumed in limited quantities, writes BTA.

Specialists remind that there are two types of stroke - hemorrhagic, which is rarer but with a higher mortality rate, and ischemic.

A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm or leakage of blood from a weakened brain vessel.

An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying blood to the brain is blocked by a thrombus (clot).

High blood pressure is the most important risk factor for this type of stroke.
