[Reporter Lin Huiqin/Taipei Report] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced today that the first case of pertussis in China this year was a 10-year-old male middle school student in the north.

The last case occurred in November 2020, which is the second case of whooping cough in the past two years.

Zhuang Renxiang, deputy director of the CDC, said that the schoolchild had received 5 doses of the 5-in-1 related vaccine and developed sore throat, cough, fever, chest pain, and headache on September 20. Zhuang Renxiang pointed out that a total of 48 related contacts have been listed, including 4 people living with family members, 1 person has cough symptoms, and the remaining 3 people are asymptomatic. Arrangements have been made for testing and preventive drug administration evaluation; there are 44 community contacts, All asymptomatic, health monitoring, and re-examination if symptoms occur.

Zhuang Renxiang judged this case to be an accidental case, and mentioned that in the past, due to the epidemic prevention measures of Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19), the number of whooping cough cases was reduced, but now with the gradual loosening, there will be some respiratory infectious diseases.

According to the statistics of domestic surveillance data, there were 27, 25, 4, and 0 pertussis cases in the same period from 2018 to 2021. After deducting 0 cases in the previous year, the total number of cases per year was between 5 and 32, and most cases were less than 3 months old. Infants who were under the age of vaccination or who only received the first dose of the vaccine accounted for 57%, followed by adults over 20 years old, accounting for 27%.

Pertussis is mainly transmitted through droplets. It is highly contagious regardless of whether it is onset or not. The symptoms of infection are persistent coughing for more than two weeks, accompanied by rhinitis, sneezing, mild fever and other cold-like symptoms. Adults rarely have complications, but infants and young children are infected Later symptoms are usually more severe, especially infants under 6 months are at high risk of severe illness, which may cause pneumonia, convulsions, brain lesions, cerebral hemorrhage, and even death.

The CDC emphasizes that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent whooping cough. At present, our country provides infants and young children born at 2, 4, 6, and 18 months old, and 5 years old and before entering primary school. People with young children must take them to the contracted institution on time to complete the vaccination to obtain sufficient protection.

In addition, the source of infection in family clusters is mostly caregivers or people living with them. It is recommended that pregnant women and baby caregivers can get 1 dose of the vaccine at their own expense to reduce the chance of infection in infants and young children.
