Herds of sheep and goats are cutting low vegetation to create firebreaks around urban areas, the Independent reported.

High temperatures and droughts are causing more and more frequent heat waves around the world, and with them more and more fires.

As Europe is hit by one of the worst droughts in centuries, various methods are being put in place to reduce the risk of fire exacerbated by parched vegetation.

Some shops have stopped selling portable barbecues, beavers in England are helping to regenerate wetlands, and in the US the most advanced firefighting aircraft can drop 6 tons of water over burning areas.

Spain continues to fight forest fires

In Spain, however, shepherds and goat herders are directing their animals into risk areas to reduce low vegetation that would serve as kindling and fuel fires.

Four herds graze hard in the Serra de Collserola Natural Park, which borders much of Barcelona.

The aim is to reduce the risk of fire.
