The findings, published in a data update, support the use of

e-cigarettes

as an effective way to help people quit smoking.

This data update provides a follow-up to the initial investigations conducted last year and serves as a comprehensive review of the updated data ahead of the introduction of new e-cigarette legislation planned for next year.

This research also included other findings such as:

E-cigarettes do not pose a risk of nicotine poisoning to users, but e-liquids must be in "childproof" packaging. Although vaping is not 100% safe, most of the chemicals that cause smoking-related illnesses are absent and the chemicals present pose limited risk.

The best current estimate is that using e-cigarettes is about

95%

less harmful to health than smoking.

They suggested continuing to monitor data on e-cigarette consumption, health impact, and effectiveness for smoking cessation as products and technologies develop.
