In 1987-1990, he was the secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

Ironically, Slyunkov was born on the day of the Chernobyl disaster - April 26.

According to the Special Commission of the Supreme Council of Belarus of the 12th convocation to investigate the activities of officials and other persons involved in the concealment of information about the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, Slyunkov played a key role in the fact that in the first days of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, information about the dangers of radiation was not communicated to residents of Belarus.
