In view of the progressively increasing number of infections with COVID-19, the European representation of the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the pandemic situation will worsen in the fall and winter, Deutsche Welle reports, quoted by Darik.

It is clear that the situation at the moment is similar to that of last summer, says WHO regional director Hans Kluge.

The main difference between this year and the previous year is that the infections are now mainly with the Omicron strain sub-variants - BA.2 and BA.5, which spread even more easily than the previous variants.

Prof. Botev: Omicron is the most insidious, here's what it causes and damages

. With the increase in infected people, there is also an increase in hospitalizations.

The situation will worsen when the new school year begins and vacationers return from their trips.

In addition, with the autumn cooling, people will begin to gather indoors more often.

Kluge also reports that the number of new cases of COVID-19 in Europe has tripled in the past six weeks.

Almost 3 million new cases were registered in the last week alone.

These are half of those infected in the whole world.

States should speed up the process of providing booster doses and mandate the wearing of masks again, Kluge said.

The regional director of the WHO recommends that people over 60 years of age should be vaccinated with a second booster dose and not wait for the introduction of vaccines adapted to the new variants.

Governments and health authorities must act now to prepare for the coming months.

This includes strict monitoring of the development of the pandemic.

If it waits until autumn, it will be too late, warns Kluge.

The Belgian doctor also announced that he himself first contracted the coronavirus two weeks ago.
