The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine against COVID-19 for children aged between 6 months and 4 years for emergency use, pharmaceutical companies said today.

The vaccine for this age group is given in three doses of 3 micrograms.

The emergency use permit is based on data from phase 2 and 3 of a controlled trial involving 4,526 children aged between 6 months and 4 years, the companies said.

They said they would begin delivering pediatric doses as ordered by the US government.

The companies plan to apply for approval of their COVID-19 vaccine for this age group to regulators around the world, including the European Medicines Agency, in early July.
