'Country' star Toby Keith announced that he has been battling stomach cancer since the fall and has been undergoing treatment for the past six months.

"Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

I have spent the last 6 months undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

So far, so good.

"I need time to breathe, to recover and to relax," he told fans in a statement posted on Instagram and Twitter on Sunday (June 12th).

Keith, 60, ended his statement by saying he could not wait to spend time with his family, but admitted he "would see the fans as soon as possible".

Keith has been touring for his new album and is scheduled to perform in Illinois and Michigan on June 17 and 18, though no announcements have been made about schedule changes or cancellations.

The "I Love This Bar" singer founded the 'Toby Keith' foundation in 2006 to provide support for children battling cancer.

Eight years later, his foundation opened "a cost-effective, convenient and comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients receiving treatment," according to its website.

"There is no greater gift than keeping strong and united families during a difficult time.

"If we can relieve stress in a family, encourage a sibling and comfort a sick child, then we will make a difference in the fight against cancer," the foundation's website said.
