As of January 1, 2018, all vehicles older than 10 years and those that do not have a "Euro 4" standard engine can not be cleared through the territory of Kosovo.

This was done due to legal restrictions on imports and to protect the environment from the release of car gases.

The determination of seniority is based on the first year of registration which must be within the period 01 January to 31 December 2012.

In general, the average age of vehicles circulating in Kosovo is 18 years, or about 10 years more than the average number of vehicles circulating within the European Union.

During 2019, it was tried to remove this restriction, but that this proposal had not succeeded, which was rejected in the Assembly of Kosovo.

According to the latest data of the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) in our country are registered about 400 thousand motor and non-motor vehicles or an increase of 11.4 percent over the previous year.

"In 2021, 397,935 motor and non-motor vehicles are registered in Kosovo, compared to 2020 we have an increase of 11.4 percent," says KAS.

The largest participation have vehicles with 322 thousand 381 vehicles, followed by carriers over 3.5 tons with 27,748 and those under 3.5 tons with 42 thousand 730 vehicles.

EU cars are now on average 11.8 years old.

Lithuania and Romania have the oldest fleet of cars, with almost 17 years, while the newest can be found in Luxembourg with 6.7 years.

The average age of light commercial vehicles in the EU is 11.9 years.

Of the four main EU markets, Italy has the oldest van fleet at 13.8 years, followed by Spain at 13.3 years.

For new cars imported from European Union countries, since the implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement, in 2016, no customs duties are paid.

For used cars, the customs tax is paid 9 percent from 10 percent as before.
