With 513 votes in favor, 22 against and 19 abstentions, members of the European Parliament have voted to ban the import of gas and oil from Russia.

This decision was taken after a series of economic sanctions imposed against the regime of Vladimir Putin after Russia's military aggression in Ukraine.

"MEPs vote overwhelmingly in favor of banning Russian gas and oil imports due to military aggression in Ukraine.

EU governments are unlikely to do so.

"The fifth round of sanctions that is underway only bans imports of coal, which accounts for 4 percent of the bloc's energy coming from Russia," said correspondent Jack Parrock.

Due to the start of the occupation of Ukraine on February 24, the United States has imposed a ban on imports of Russian gas and oil.

But calls for the EU to impose such sanctions have increased this week, following reports of civilian killings in Ukraine, which some countries have branded as war crimes.

Russia's oil and products provided a third of the EU's gross energy in 2020, and the European bloc has used this product to generate electricity, as well as to transport and produce chemicals.
