Three people were killed and 41 were injured after a bus traveling from Adana to Konya and carrying students overturned on its way to Nigde County (central Turkey), Turkey's NTV reported.

The driver lost control and the bus overturned in a section near the village of Guney on the Adana-Nigde road.

A large number of police and medical teams were sent to the scene.

Two people died on the spot and 42 were injured, but later one of the injured died in hospital, adds BTA.

Nowhere's governor Mustafa Koch said the crash happened around 4 p.m.

The bus, owned by a private company, was transporting students from Adana to Konya.

The wounded were hospitalized in Nigde, Eregli, Bor, Ulukashla, the governor said.

The students were from Selcuk University in Konya and were returning from a youth program organized yesterday by the ruling Justice and Development Party in Adana, Hurriyet reported.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also attended the Adana Youth Festival and addressed the youth.

In a message on his profile on the social network, Erdogan today expressed his condolences to the families of the three young people killed in the crash and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded, noting that the tragic incident occurred on his way back from the Adana Youth Festival.

Government ministers also posted condolences on Twitter.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the driver's sleep was the cause of the crash, Hurriyet reported.

Soylu said this, referring to the initial testimony of the driver.
