The statistics on the spread of the new Omicron variants of the coronavirus are based solely on the registration of cases over the age of 60, since at the end of May the health authorities in the country officially stopped counting the newly infected among younger people.

Even on this basis, however, the Ministry of Health found an increase in the number of hospitalized patients and pressure on intensive care units.

The highest employment is in La Rioja, nearly 11%, followed by Madrid and Catalonia, and the lowest remains in Andalusia.

In the last week alone, the number of infected people increased by 136,000, and the number of deaths by 312.

Minister Carolina Darias called for "prudence" and recommended the re-use of masks indoors amid rising infections.

According to her, the administration of the fourth dose and the arrival in the fall of the new vaccines adapted to the latest variants of Omicron (BA.4 and BA.5) will be crucial in limiting the incidence.

Health authorities warn that the danger is higher in the summer due to the lifting of measures in many countries.

"The virus will not go away just because countries stop monitoring it. It continues to infect, it continues to change and it still kills," said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe.
