If the Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov declared Severodonetsk "liberated" on May 27, the bloody battle for this Ukrainian city in the Luhansk region lasted another month.

A small number of Ukrainian defenders were on the verge of defeat, surrounded on three sides and exposed to the terrible artillery fire of Russian forces and pro-Russian separatists controlled by Moscow.

But at a critical moment, when surrender or withdrawal seemed to be the only option before the defenders, various reinforcements arrived in the city.

And these were mainly members of the Ukrainian "Legion of Foreigners", ie the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, in the ranks of which fight volunteers from Georgia, Great Britain, France, USA, Australia, Canada and other countries.

Ukrainians and foreign volunteers then launched a surprise counterattack and reportedly repulsed Russian forces from the city center.

But as the Russians received new reinforcements and heavy weapons, they carried out new and even fiercer attacks.

In fierce fighting on every road and building, the defenders were eventually pushed into the Severodonetsk industrial zone dominated by the Nitrogen chemical plant, where they barricaded themselves with several hundred civilians who had been sheltered there by bombardment and bombardment.

From there, however, they not only repulsed Russian and Chechen attacks, inflicting significant losses on them, but, according to reports, continued with small counterattacks, mostly overnight.

But after the demolition of the last bridge between Severodonetsk and the twin city of Lysychansk on the other side of the Siverskyi Donets River and the capture of the suburban town of Metolkina last week, the situation for veterans has become unstable.

With the losses increasing, they risked ending up in a complete environment, such as Mariupol defenders from the Azovstal steel plant, who eventually had to surrender en masse.

Otherwise, the Ukrainian authorities have called on the armed forces to surrender and not to continue their resistance in the city of Severodonetsk.
