German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that the "fictitious referendums" that Russia intends to organize in several Ukrainian regions are "unacceptable", BTA reported, citing AFP.

"It is very clear that these sham referendums are unacceptable and do not comply with international law," the chancellor told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"All this is just an attempt at imperialist aggression, which they want to dress up in this form," Scholz added, calling on Russia to withdraw its troops.

The Moscow-appointed authorities in four regions of Ukraine announced today that from September 23 to 27, "referendums" will be held on joining these territories to Russia.

The Ukrainian president's office has vowed to eliminate the Russian "threat," and the defense ministry compared these referendums to the Nazi Anschluss of Austria in 1938.
