On Friday, September 30, the United States and Albania proposed that the UN Security Council vote for a resolution condemning Moscow's annexation of part of Ukraine.

The delegation of Russia used the right of a permanent member and blocked its adoption.

Another four countries, including China, abstained from voting.

This is reported by Reuters.

US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, presented a resolution calling on Security Council member states not to recognize any changes in the status of Ukraine and obliging Russia to withdraw its troops.

In the boardroom, she argued that the attempted annexation of a sovereign nation's territory was against the founding principles of the United Nations, and said Putin was celebrating "this flagrant violation of international law" with a concert that took place after he announced the annexation.

"He threw a party in Red Square to pat himself on the back for these illegal referendums," Thomas-Greenfield said.

Ten countries supported the resolution, while China, Gabon, India and Brazil abstained.

Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasyl Nebenzia, was the only one who voted against the resolution, and used the right of veto that the Russian Federation has as a permanent member of the Security Council.

China's ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, abstained from the resolution, but noted that "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be protected."

At the same time, he added that the "legitimate security concerns" of other countries should also be taken seriously.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said earlier on Friday that Washington will rely on the UN General Assembly if the Security Council fails to pass the resolution.

"If Russia blocks the Security Council from fulfilling its duties, we will ask the UN General Assembly, where every country has the right to vote, to make it clear that redrawing borders by force is unacceptable," said Blinken.

We will remind you that earlier President Volodymyr Zelenskyi spoke via video link at the meeting of the UN Security Council regarding fictitious referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian leader called on the world community to take action to punish the aggressor country.
