More than 100 forest fires were registered within 24 hours in Greece, the national fire service announced on Twitter on Friday, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Due to strong winds, firefighters were unable to control a large fire south of the Cretan port of Rethymno by midday, the fire department said in a statement on Twitter.

Sixteen firefighting planes and three helicopters were dispatched and the village of Orne was evacuated as a precaution, local media reported.

There was also a fire southeast of Athens this morning.

Residents of the village of Feriza were advised by a warning text to leave the area.

However, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by early afternoon.

For Saturday, authorities again issued the second-highest level of forest fire warning for several regions.

The affected areas include most of Athens, the islands of Crete, Euboea, Lesvos and Samos, and the northeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula.
