Maharashtra government minister Nawab Malik is in jail in a money laundering case

Mumbai :

Rajya sabha Polls: Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik and former ministers

after a special court in Mumbai refused to grant bail for one day for voting in the elections to be held on Friday for six Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra.

Anil Deshmukh

has moved the Bombay High Court for relief on Thursday.

The legal team of Malik and Deshmukh sought permission to file the petition challenging the special court's order and requested for an urgent hearing.

The NCP leaders, in their petitions, have requested that they be either granted temporary bail for one day or they be allowed to vote at the polling booth under escort.

A bench of Justice PD Naik is likely to hear the petitions of both the leaders on Friday.

Deshmukh, in his petition, has sought a direction to the Mumbai Central Jail to take him to the polling booth for the Rajya Sabha elections as an interim relief.

Deshmukh has sought permission to cast his vote on Friday.

Malik's lawyer Tariq Saeed mentioned the petition on Thursday and sought an urgent hearing on Friday before the court of Justice Naik.

He said that he is requesting relief like Deshmukh.

Deshmukh and Malik are currently in jail in connection with various money laundering cases being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The two had filed an application for temporary bail before Special Judge RN Rokade last week.

The court, after hearing arguments from all sides, had refused to grant temporary bail to Malik and Deshmukh during the day.

The ED had opposed his petitions, saying that prisoners did not have the right to vote under the Representation of the People Act. Deshmukh was arrested by the ED in November 2021 in a money laundering case.

Malik was arrested by the ED on February 23 this year in connection with its probe into a money laundering case involving the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates.

Every vote is crucial for the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to elect Sanjay Pawar, the Shiv Sena's second candidate in the elections to the six Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra.

The NCP is a constituent of the MVA.
