Operatives of the National Security Agency of Montenegro (ANB) and the Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT) detained six Russian diplomats, 30 Russian citizens with temporary residence permits and two Montenegrin citizens on suspicion of espionage.

This was reported by Pobjeda publication on Thursday, September 29 with reference to its own sources.

According to the publication, searches are being conducted in the homes of the detainees, law enforcement officers suspect that 38 detained persons were involved in the creation of a criminal organization.

Special state prosecutor Vukas Radonych confirmed the conduct of special investigative actions.

Earlier, the prime minister of this Balkan country, Dritan Abazovich, said live during a government meeting that an "international operation" is underway with the help of external partners, in which the prosecutor's office of Montenegro participates in order to protect the country's interests, but he did not provide details.

In 2016, Montenegro accused Russian agents of conspiring to bring the pro-Russian opposition to power by assassinating then-Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and disrupting the former Yugoslav republic's integration into NATO.

It will be recalled that at the end of August of this year, the Security Agency of Montenegro (ANB) declared that the country "is in a state of hybrid war" because Russian hackers launched a powerful cyber attack against the government and public services.
