Google has removed dozens of apps from its PlayStore online store after it was discovered that they contained malicious codes that collect information about users' locations, phone numbers and email addresses.

This includes the QR code scanner, weather app, and Muslim prayer app.

Some of these applications have been installed over 10 million times, Telegrafi reports.

"All applications on Google Play must be in line with our measures.

"When we find that an application violates the rules, they take the appropriate measures," a Google spokesman told the BBC.

Google has previously warned application developers that they need to make it clear to users what information they will be sharing while using the application.
