More than 30 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a Russian missile strike in eastern Ukraine as civilians tried to evacuate to safer parts of the country, the state-owned railway company said.

According to foreign media, the Telegraph reports, the attack was at the Kramatorsk train station, with images showing bodies scattered across the ground, lying among abandoned luggage.

Some had already been put in the bag, while other photos showed smoke coming out of the station as firefighters worked at the scene.

"Two rockets hit the Kramatorsk railway station.

People are hurt.

We are clarifying the details ", wrote on social networks Alexander Kamyshin, the head of the Ukrainian railway company.

He later added: "According to operational data, more than 30 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in the rocket attack on the Kramatorsk railway station."

Regional Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said thousands of people were at the train station at the time of the attack, preparing to be evacuated to safer areas as Russia focuses its troops on eastern Ukraine.

Reuters news agency said it could not immediately verify the information Russia has not yet commented on reports of the attack and the death toll.

Moscow has denied targeting civilians since the February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
