The application of scientific developments such as new genomic techniques must not compromise high safety standards for human and animal health and environmental impact. This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Kiril VatevKiril Vatev as a member of the Management Board of the Association of Meat Processors and owner of a meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels during a debate on the draft Regulation on plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques and food and feed from them.

It is important for us that the draft Regulation proposes durable solutions over time, emphasized Minister Vatev. He pointed out that it is necessary to continue discussions on the coexistence of products of new genomic techniques with conventional and organic farming and the conservation of biodiversity. Equal access to the gene pool for breeding activities and non-admission of patent restrictions are required.

Within the Council, Minister Vatev met with the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Netherlands Pete Adema. At the meeting, Minister Vatev pointed out that given climate change and the transition to sustainable production, it is necessary to look for new solutions. Minister Vatev also highlighted the long-standing good cooperation and friendly relations between the Dutch University of Wageningen and the Bulgarian Agricultural Academy (SAA).

At the meeting, the two ministers also discussed the import of agricultural products from Ukraine into the EU. Minister Vatev presented the situation with the import of sunflower, unrefined and refined oil, honey, dry milk and frozen raspberries on the Bulgarian market. He added that this year is a turning point for Bulgarian farmers because of the drought and the increased prices of fertilizers and chemicals. "The most important thing for competition is to be on an equal footing," he said.

On the topic of reducing waste in agriculture and food, Minister Vatev presented the activities of the Bulgarian Food Bank and its actions for the utilization of surplus food and its timely redistribution to people in need.
