Traders of fruit and vegetables in bulk are obliged to announce prices per kilogram, reminded by the online platform "We consumers" on the occasion of media publications and comments on social networks that these products are massively sold at prices for 100 grams or for half a kilogram.

This can mislead customers into believing that the goods are cheaper.

According to the Consumer Protection Act, traders are obliged for goods sold in bulk to indicate the price per unit of measure, in this case it is a kilogram.

If the fruit is placed in a package, the price for the quantity in it and the price for one kilogram must be known. Exceptions are cases where the selling price and the unit price are identical. This means that even if the trader decides to sell 500 grams of strawberries in a box, he cannot bypass the equipment and indicate only the price for the corresponding quantity – he must also indicate how much 1 kilogram costs.

In addition, when offering prepacked goods, the indicated selling price and unit price should refer to the net weight of the goods. That is, it is unacceptable to include and pay by the consumer the weight of the package.

The indication of the selling price and the unit price is done by labels, price lists, plates or other appropriate means. Prices must be in BGN, including all taxes and fees, and be unambiguous, easily understandable, clear and legible and not mislead the consumer.

Between 8 and 10 leva per kilogram - the price of cherries

We recommend that retailers adjust their behaviour and consumers be more careful about price tagging when shopping.
