Street hawker economies are making a comeback in several major cities, from Shenzhen to Shanghai and Hangzhou.

[Financial Channel/Comprehensive Report] China's street hawker economy, which has been trapped in regulatory troubles for many years, has finally made a comeback.

Driven by a post-pandemic economic recovery, major cities are lifting strict rules on street vendors, giving vendors the chance to operate in designated areas and boost local consumption.

Several major cities, from the southern city of Shenzhen to Shanghai and Hangzhou, have eased restrictions on street businesses, according to Chinese media reports.

The move is seen as stimulating economic recovery by boosting local consumption.

Shenzhen lifted the blanket ban, announcing that street vendors can operate in designated areas, according to revised guidelines issued on April 28.

The new rules, effective Sept. 1, allow brick-and-mortar shop owners to set up stalls outside their stores, which had been banned until now.

Shanghai moved to draw up a detailed street vendor business plan just two months after lifting a 20-year ban on street vendors last year.

A similar plan was rolled out in Hangzhou in early March, with local officials promising to step up support for shopkeepers in commercial districts, making it easier to do business outside their stores.

The Beijing Technology and Business University economics professor pointed out that these changes will help stimulate consumption and provide more employment opportunities for individuals with business licenses.
