The Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Local Government Accounts (LAAC) Stanslaus Mabula has said that the statistics on the granting and repayment of Council loans show that many young people are not trusted in fully repaying loans through 10 percent of local income.

He said this when he joined the LAAC Committee to inspect the Zongwe Fishing Youth Group that is engaged in fishing in Lake Tanganyika, Kasanga ward in Kalambo district.

Mabula, has said that the Zongwe Fishing Youth Group was loaned 6.5 million shillings in 2020 but until now three years have passed, the group has only been able to raise 900,000 shillings.

In the Kalambo council, young people have been given 30 percent of loans, while women have received 62.5 percent, we young people have been bewitched by whom?

we are waiting to run to the streets to complain that the Government is not helping us but the truth is that we are given opportunities but we do not use them."

Mabula has said

He said, from the reasons explained by the group that the nets were caught on the rocks and the boats were damaged.

In addition, Mabula has asked the Director to see how to increase the Group one million shillings that will help them buy nets to continue fishing activities that will enable them to repay the loan.

In addition, Mabula has asked the Social Development Officer to ensure that he meets with the group and conduct a review by inspecting the group's assets and helping them on how to recover the remaining funds.

The Zongwe Fishing Group got a loan from the Council for six and a half million shillings in September 2020, after getting the loan the Group bought fishing equipment which is one boat engine, two boats and 30 pc nets for fishing Perch and Kuhe fish, 3 models for storing fish to get cold, 5 life jackets, 2 tarpaulins, one buoy and sewing thread.
