The news of the raid on the Beijing office of Max Smart Group and the detention of its staff comes amid months of diplomatic tension between the United States and China.

Events that took place during this period include the U.S. military shooting down a suspected Chinese spy balloon in February, and the Taiwan president's transit to the U.S. next week.

By way of email, Max Wisdom Group told Reuters: "We can confirm that the Chinese authorities have detained 5 employees in our Beijing office, all of whom are Chinese nationals, and the authorities have also ordered the Beijing office to suspend work."

Maxwise said they are ready to work with Chinese authorities to "resolve any misunderstandings that may have led to this incident," and that the group's top concern is the safety and well-being of its colleagues in China.

Meisi Zhizhi Group said: "Meisi Zhizhi Group has not received any formal statutory notice about the suing group, and we have asked the authorities to release our employees."

An anonymous source from the New York headquarters of Maxwise Group told Reuters earlier that the group's local legal adviser in Beijing said the raid took place on the afternoon of the 20th, and those detained were held outside Beijing. Somewhere, they are not allowed to have contact with the outside world.

China's foreign ministry and Beijing Public Security Bureau did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
