(CNA) Amazon Inc., the largest U.S. online retailer, cut 18,000 jobs in January, Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Andy Jassy said today that he will cut another 9,000 jobs.

"Given the uncertain economic environment ... and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more lean in cost and headcount," Jassy said in a memo to Amazon employees.

Jassy also told employees that this wave of layoffs will mainly affect Amazon's cloud computing, human resources, advertising and Twitch game video streaming services and other departments.

But compared with the layoffs of other technology giants, this wave of layoffs accounts for a relatively small proportion of Amazon's total workforce.

In December 2022, the total number of Amazon employees will reach 1.5 million.

As the US technology industry continues to downsize, social media giant Facebook (FB) parent Meta has laid off nearly 25% of its staff in just a few months.
