[Compilation of Lu Yongshan/Comprehensive Report] The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), a think tank, recently released a report stating that China has increased its use of coercion in recent years, trying to force other countries to cooperate and shape an international order that is beneficial to Beijing.

Among them, the most common target of Beijing's coercive measures is Taiwan's relationship with other countries.

Regarding China's diplomatic coercion, one of the countermeasures recommended by ASPI experts is that Taiwan and other democratic countries should join the "Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership" (CPTPP) as soon as possible.

According to a report by Radio Free Asia, ASPI pointed out in the report "Countering China's Diplomatic Coercion" published on February 22 that between 2020 and 2022, China has taken 73 diplomatic coercive actions against different countries; Australia, Lithuania and Taiwan, and the Taiwan issue is the most common focus of these coercive incidents.

ASPI analyst Daria Impiombato, who participated in the writing of the report, said in an interview that most of China's diplomatic coercion is related to Taiwan.

"The focus of China's diplomatic coercion is clearly on Taiwan; in fact, countries are often coerced because they support Taiwan," she said.

In the report, ASPI put forward a number of suggestions to counter China’s coercion, including that democratic countries should develop a diversified supply chain layout economically, and avoid excessive dependence on Chinese products, components, and raw materials. The report also recommends that democratic countries join CPTPP as soon as possible.

Impiombato believes that the agreement should include Taiwan.

The ASPI report also mentioned that democracies should form special transnational response teams to deal with China's diplomatic coercion.

Impiombato said the group should also involve Taiwan.
