[Compilation of Lu Yongshan/Comprehensive Report] French retail giant Carrefour (Carrefour) has opened stores in many countries around the world, but since January this year, Chinese consumers have reported that some Carrefour stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Kunming and other places have appeared. The shelves are empty, and the use of shopping cards is restricted.

In addition, because Carrefour has closed more than 100 stores in China in the past few years, there are even rumors in the market that Carrefour may withdraw from the Chinese market.

To make matters worse, Zhang Qizhe, chief operating officer of Carrefour China, has confirmed that he has resigned recently.

According to reports from China's "Finance" magazine and "Southern Metropolis Daily", due to continuous losses, problems in the capital chain and relationship with suppliers, Carrefour's stores in various parts of China have been seriously out of stock since January this year, and so far no improvement has been seen. Signs: According to statistics, at present, two-thirds of Carrefour stores have a large area of vacant shelves, and the abnormal rate of stores in Beijing and Shanghai exceeds 80%.

At the Carrefour store located in Jianxiangqiao, Beijing, the vacancy of the shelves has not improved recently, and many products are about to expire.

A cashier in the store said: "It's been so long, it's just empty, and there is no notice that the store will be closed." Another sales promoter also said that there has been no notice of when the stock will be replenished, and what the next step of the store will be. ?

Will it be closed?

The grassroots employees are panicked.

In the Carrefour store located in Shenzhen Xiangbin Plaza, there are a large area of vacancy on the upper and lower floors of the store. The middle aisle area where the themed series of products should have been placed is now no shelf display, and the product display area has empty shelves and out-of-stock products. Condition.

The staff revealed that this situation had already occurred one month before the Chinese New Year. "The notice received was that it was going to be remodeled, but the specific time when the remodeling will be completed has not been notified."

Due to the serious shortage of goods, consumers are worried that the store will be closed, and they have asked to use the balance of the shopping card to shop.

However, Carrefour has posted notices prohibiting consumption of shopping cards in various stores, and even restricted card refunds on the grounds that "the card cannot be returned if it is not purchased by the person."

To add insult to injury, Carrefour China Chief Operating Officer Zhang Qizhe has confirmed that he has recently resigned due to "personal factors".

Zhang Qizhe became the chief operating officer after Suning.com acquired 80% of Carrefour's China business in 2019.

As for the recent resignation of Carrefour's vice presidents in China, the company assures that it is not true.

Carrefour entered China in 1995 and opened its first store in Beijing, and then expanded rapidly. By 2006, it had more than 100 stores in China.

However, with the continuous rise of online retailing in China, foreign brands such as Carrefour are losing money again and again, and many brands have been acquired or withdrawn from the Chinese market, and Carrefour is no exception.

In 2019, Suning.com acquired 80% of Carrefour's China business, but after being merged into Suning, Carrefour still failed to turn losses into profits.

From 2019 to 2021, Carrefour China closed 49 stores respectively. In the first three quarters of last year, 0 new stores were opened, 54 stores were closed, and only 151 stores remained in China.

In response to issues such as restrictions on the use of shopping cards and store closures in many stores, and even rumors that Carrefour may withdraw from the Chinese market, the relevant person in charge of Carrefour China clarified on February 4 that there is no plan to withdraw from China, and shopping cards are restricted. It is because of the adjustment of the supply chain and the reselling of scalpers.
