In January of this year, Ukrainians sold to commercial banks cash and non-cash

currency

for a total amount of 1,227.9 million dollars (equivalent), and also bought 1,791.9 million dollars.

The net purchase of foreign currency amounted to 564.0 million dollars.

This is stated on the website of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

For comparison, in January, Ukrainians increased their purchases of foreign currency by $100.3 million compared to December, when they bought $463.7 million.

The volume of purchases of dollars in January 2023 is the maximum in recent years.

There was a similar demand only in April 2021, when Ukrainians bought 545.9 million dollars.

More than half of the demand ($370.5 million) in January 2023 fell on non-cash currency, which Ukrainians buy from banks at a rate close to the official one (36.6 hryvnias), while on the cash market the rate fluctuates around the level of 40.5 hryvnias for a dollar

Earlier it became known that the 

Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine expects that the dollar exchange rate will reach UAH 50 in 2023, and the consumer price index will be 30.6%.

According to the macro forecast, at the beginning of 2023 the dollar exchange rate will be UAH 42, and at the end of the year the hryvnia will depreciate to UAH 50 per dollar.

Ukraine's GDP will grow by 4.6%.
