[Reporter Lin Jinghua/Report from Taipei] Realize the goal of "net zero electricity"!

Taipower signed a "Memorandum of Cooperation on Carbon Reduction and Green Energy Technology Development and Application" with the Academia Sinica today (1). Efforts to accelerate the process of promoting national zero-carbon electricity.

Taipower pointed out that in order to promote hydrogen power generation, it introduced my country's first hydrogen-mixed micro-turbine power generation system last year, and successfully mixed 10% hydrogen to generate clean and low-carbon electricity. With the benefits of carbon sequestration, we hope that through the signing of the MOU, we will work together towards the 2050 net zero carbon emission goal of electricity.

Tseng Wen-sheng, Acting Chairman of Taipower, said that Taiwan has a high density of electricity consumption. In response to the future development of the power grid and renewable energy, some generator sets are still needed to assist in regulating the power grid. Hydrogen is used as fuel to allow the generators to continue to maintain the stability of the power grid while reducing carbon emissions. It has become a very large demand for Taipower, and hopes to cooperate with Academia Sinica. "The goal is to produce the first barrel of hydrogen by the end of this year, and carry out hydrogen co-combustion tests with the gas-fired units of Xingda Power Plant." It is for the application of decarbonized hydrogen-fired power generation. It is hoped that through the connection of the research and development end with the application end, the implementation of the technology will be accelerated, and the country will be helped to increase the proportion of zero-carbon electricity as soon as possible.

Taipower explained that the content of the MOU cooperation includes the joint development of hybrid hydrogen and all-hydrogen power generation applications with "decarbonization and hydrogen combustion" power generation technology (natural gas cracking hydrogen combustion power generation technology), initial mining technology demonstration, and will be integrated with Taipower's micro-gas turbine power generation technology. In the decentralized power grid; in the future, the scale will be expanded to supply hydrogen to domestic power plant units with decarbonized hydrogen combustion, and gradually increase the hydrogen mixing ratio and hydrogen supply.

In addition, the two parties will also exchange views on the progress and research results of green energy technologies such as geothermal energy and ocean energy.

Taipower stated that carbon-free hydrogen combustion is an upstream technology that provides carbon-free hydrogen sources for hydrogen power generation. After research and development by Academia Sinica, it uses natural gas cracking to sustainably and stably produce hydrogen and solid carbon; among them, hydrogen can be used for power generation and industrial use. Solid carbon can be used as raw materials for industrial production, and no carbon dioxide is produced during the hydrogen production process, so that this technology can not only provide stable multi-element power, but also play a role in carbon reduction.
