Fuel prices in Hungary have risen since the country's government in December lifted restrictions it had imposed on fuel price increases and increased excise taxes.

Against this background, many drivers have started traveling to neighboring countries such as Slovakia and Romania, where fuel is cheaper, Reuters reported.

The Hungarian city of Esztergom is located on the banks of the Danube River.

On the opposite coast, in Slovakia, is the town of Sturovo.

A liter of diesel there costs 1,619 euros on Saturdays and Sundays, while at the gas station of the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL (MOL) in Esztergom it costs 690 forints (1.69 euros).

The difference in the price of gasoline is smaller, notes Reuters.

"We traveled to Slovakia during the holidays and saw how much cheaper it was there when we refueled," said Hungarian Tibor Toth.

He crosses with his car the bridge that connects Eschergom and Sturovo in order to refuel at a lower price.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who was re-elected for a fourth consecutive term in April 2022, is facing the most serious economic challenges since the beginning of his administration, Reuters notes.

Inflation in Hungary has risen to 24 percent on an annual basis, and the country's economy has headed for stagnation this year.

What are the fuel prices in the countries next to Bulgaria?

Orbán's government was forced to cancel the fuel price cap that households were entitled to benefit from due to acute shortages that occurred in early December after foreign companies cut fuel supplies to Hungary.

At the same time, the cabinet in Budapest raised excise taxes on fuels and imposed additional taxes on the profits of the MOL company, realized from the sale of Russian oil.
