[Reporters Xu Ziling, Ou Yuxiang/Report from Taipei] Another case of personal data from a domestic unit being "online"!

Recently, several public and private sector personal data have been sold on the overseas forum Breach Forums. On the 17th, another unknown person posted on the forum, claiming to have leaked information from well-known Taiwanese media.

Information security experts call on the media to check as soon as possible which internal database the outflowing data comes from, in order to strengthen information security protection and separation.

An unknown person with the account name Dzogbewu posted on the Breach Forums website yesterday, claiming to have leaked information from well-known Taiwanese media.

He claimed that the data came from an old database containing 825 users, and posted 8 samples on the website, suspected to contain the account numbers, passwords and mailboxes of these users.

Liu Yanbo, an information security expert, said in an interview that this should be an act of hackers stealing information and selling it. The price usually depends on the newness and accuracy of the information, and it is sold on an open forum, which is in danger of being traced by the police. It is speculated that it should be second-hand old information obtained from the dark web or underground channels; there is also the possibility of mixing and forging information, and posting some information to gain trust and blackmail buyers.

He also revealed that similar incidents have occurred in many domestic media recently. It is recommended that companies conduct information security checks and inspections as soon as possible, and make up for loopholes, so as to avoid horizontal intrusions or implanted secret doors, which will cause them to be hacked again in the future.

However, the unknown person's motive for disclosing media information may not be pure.

An information security professional pointed out that information is usually released on public websites, "the intention of declaring and intimidating is greater than the income from trading", and the information that has been put on forums for sale recently is all industries related to cross-strait issues.

The level of attacks on Taiwan’s cybersecurity has been intensifying since last year, and the financial industry, manufacturing industry, and government units have suffered greatly. It is reminiscent of Taiwan’s cyber attack by China after the then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, came to Taiwan last year.

Liu Yanbo called on the media to check as soon as possible which internal database the leaked data came from, in order to strengthen information security protection and separation.

In fact, my country’s media is the main victim of cyber attacks. The information security company TeamT5 analyzed the state of cyber attacks in 2022 and found that the top 4 industries that are affected are: the government and the military, the IT industry, online gaming, and the media. With the latest news in their hands, the media can easily become the first target of hackers.
