[Central News Agency] A Norwegian freighter ran aground in the Suez Canal today. After the authorities dispatched tugboats to help the freighter float up and tow away, the channel traffic has returned to normal.

Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chairman Osama Rabie said the ship ran aground "suddenly due to a technical failure" and was now being towed away by a tugboat for repairs, Agence France-Presse reported.

Leth Agencies, a shipping company, tweeted earlier: "M/V Glory ran aground near Alaqantarah while joining southbound convoy. Suez Canal Authority tugboats working to resurface the vessel."

Leth Agencies later announced that canal authority tugboats had assisted in refloating the vessel, adding that 21 southbound vessels would begin resuming their voyages with only minor delays.

M/V Glory has a length of 225 meters.

M/V Glory is located in a single-lane section of the Suez Canal south of Port Said in the Mediterranean Sea, according to satellite tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press.

This is not the first time that a ship has been stranded in the Suez Canal. The Panamanian-flagged Evergreen giant cargo ship "Ever Given" ran aground in the Suez Canal for 6 days in March 2021, disrupting global trade.

In August last year, the Affinity V oil tanker registered in Singapore ran aground briefly in the canal. Fortunately, it was resurfaced with the assistance of a tugboat, causing a 5-hour interruption of shipping.

The Associated Press reported that according to the data registered by the Joint Coordination Center (JCC), which oversees the implementation of Ukraine's grain export agreement, the stranded M/V Glory was carrying more than 65,000 metric tons of corn from Ukraine to China.

M/V Glory was released after being inspected by the Joint Coordination Center off the coast of Istanbul on January 3.

The staff of the Joint Coordination Center includes Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian nationals, as well as United Nations staff.
