The National Cooperative Development Commission (TCDC) has decided to start using digital scales in the purchase of cotton crops, in order to eliminate the deception of buyers to suppress the rights of farmers in measurements.

The Registrar of TCDC, Dr. Benson Ndiege has explained this today December 28, 2022 in a special interview with HabariLeo, on strategies to ensure cotton farming benefits farmers.

Dr. Ndiege has said that digital scales will be provided to the Agricultural and Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS), which are the market managers, so that the farmer can get the correct measurement and payment.

"In the sense that the scales that move by hand there is a farmer from the village who does not know how to read the scale, and when he is there he is told that it is 50 kg but it is 70 kg.

"Despite the fact that the price may be friendly, you may still find that the farmer has lost weight, so we will distribute the scales to all the cooperatives," he said.

He said that the digital scale will enable the farmer to determine the weight of his load clearly and be given a receipt with all the figures, including the weight of the cotton and the actual value.
