Illegal activities by North Korean hackers are rampant on the Internet.

[Financial Channel/Comprehensive Report] South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) said on Thursday (22nd) that North Korean hackers have stolen about 1.5 trillion won (NT$33.3 billion) of encrypted assets in the past five years, especially this year. The amount stolen accounted for more than half.

According to comprehensive media reports, NIS pointed out that North Korea has been focusing on cyber crimes since the United Nations strengthened economic sanctions due to its nuclear test in 2017. Therefore, North Korea is considered to be the country with the strongest cyber theft technology.

North Korea has turned to hacking and other illegal cyber activities as a source of funding as the United Nations prepares for COVID-19, experts and officials in South Korea say.

Of the 1.5 trillion won stolen, 800 billion won (NT$17.8 billion) occurred in 2022, the NIS said.

It is said that more than 100 billion won (TWD 2.2 billion) came from South Korea.

NIS predicts that next year North Korea may carry out more cyber attacks, in addition to encrypted assets, it will also steal South Korea's most advanced technology, foreign policy and national security confidential information.

It is worth mentioning that the United States, Japan, and South Korea are working together to strengthen their stance on putting pressure on North Korea. A North Korean company imposed sanctions, hoping to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and return to the denuclearization negotiating table.
