[Reporter Hong Youfang / Hsinchu Report] Leading wafer foundry TSMC (2330) actively drives the semiconductor supply chain to implement low-carbon management, and encourages suppliers to build carbon capture equipment for distillation towers to rectify industrial-grade liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2). The residual gas in the process is re-introduced into the process for secondary purification, and then reprocessed into electronic-grade liquid carbon dioxide that meets TSMC's quality specifications to improve the resilience of the green supply chain. As of August this year, 500 metric tons of carbon dioxide has been successfully captured and completed. The equipment has been constructed and put into trial operation. It is estimated that the carbon reduction will be about 1,000 metric tons per year after it is officially launched in the future.

Responding to climate change is the responsibility of sustainable business operations. TSMC has committed to achieving net zero emissions in the Republic of China by 2050 and has issued the "Climate-Related Financial Disclosure Report". In addition to promoting climate risk control and mitigation actions, the green supply chain will also be able to achieve net zero emissions by then. Zero emission is an important part. Through cooperation with suppliers, we can explore opportunities for energy saving and carbon reduction, and jointly promote sustainable development of the environment.

TSMC said that when industrial-grade liquid carbon dioxide is purified in a distillation tower, high-purity carbon dioxide will enter a refrigerator to become electronic-grade liquid carbon dioxide, which is a key raw material for semiconductor manufacturing, while lower-purity carbon dioxide will be separated and discharged. .

Carbon emissions generated during supply chain operations are an important part of the company. In order to be friendly to the environment and improve the efficiency of carbon dioxide use, TSMC launched the "Supplier Liquid Carbon Dioxide Carbon Capture Meter" in the first quarter of last year without affecting the quality of the original process. "Picture", encourage suppliers to renovate the pipeline at the top of the rectification tower, add a recovery line to capture the separated carbon dioxide, and lead it back to the tower for re-purification. At the same time, it is equipped with a refrigerator with better cooling effect to optimize the purification efficiency to 90% % or more, effectively improving the efficiency of energy utilization.

TSMC pointed out that the company continues to expand carbon capture opportunities in supply chain management. It is recommended that suppliers design a carbon dioxide residual liquid recovery system for their returning tankers, and add pipelines to vaporize the residual liquid carbon dioxide in the tanker. The liquid carbon dioxide enters the raw material tank and is led back to the rectification tower for secondary purification. The equipment construction and trial operation have been completed in July this year.

In addition, for suppliers whose manufacturing process will directly emit carbon dioxide, TSMC also encourages them to set up carbon capture equipment to optimize carbon reduction benefits, and go all out for the development of a sustainable semiconductor supply chain.
