The first pilot demonstration site for "CO2 capture and reuse" in Taiwan.

[Reporter Liao Jianing/Taipei Report] The first pilot demonstration site of "CO2 capture and reuse" in Taiwan, which was commissioned at the end of last year, can capture 36 tons of carbon dioxide emitted by the process every year and convert it into 12 tons of methane and other chemicals , the scale will be gradually enlarged in the future. In addition to the petrochemical industry, it can be used in various industries such as steel and power plants. It is expected to reach a carbon capture level of 100 tons.

It is worth mentioning that the pilot plant is made in Taiwan. By establishing my country's own technology, it has reversed the predicament of relying on foreign technology imports in the past, and solved the shortcomings of high carbon capture costs.

Li Zongming, director of the Institute of Materials and Chemical Engineering of ITRI, said that carbon capture has huge business opportunities. The pilot plant is 100% made in Taiwan from technology research and development, process design, to plant completion. All equipment and equipment are localized to solve the high-cost challenge of the industry in the transformation of decarbonization.

The decarbonization transformation of the industry does not cost a high price

The pilot plant uses innovative capture technology with low energy consumption and low corrosion to capture carbon dioxide from flue gas. Combined with the development of high-efficiency nickel-based carbon dioxide conversion alkane catalysts and process technology development, carbon dioxide is converted into valuable basic chemicals.

In order to meet the 2050 net-zero carbon emission target, the Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to invest about 10 billion in research funds in the next four years to develop net-zero carbon emission technologies, and deploy them in three major directions.

The first is "research and development of new carbon reduction process technology", which can be applied in key fields including steel, petrochemical, electronics and textiles.

The technology hopes to be upgraded to the 100-ton level

The next step is to invest in "hydrogen energy technology application development", such as storage and transportation related technologies for the development of hydrogen leakage, vehicle hydrogen storage tank materials, hydrogen mixed combustion in industrial applications, and waste hydrogen recovery, purification and utilization technologies.

The last item is "complete vehicle electrification and development of strategic materials", including the development of high-energy lithium metal solid-state batteries that can improve endurance, and domestic independent wheel motor drive technology and products.

In terms of carbon capture and utilization, it focuses on developing low-cost carbon dioxide capture innovation technologies, promoting innovative technologies for carbon dioxide capture and reuse into low-carbon chemicals, and promoting the replication and diffusion of successful CCUS (carbon capture) experiences.
