India on Saturday became another country to ban the export of certain foods, in this case wheat, amid a heat wave in the country, declining yields and rising prices.

This is another blow to consumers and buyers around the world who rely on Indian production after Russia's war against Ukraine severely curtailed exports of grain, oil and similar products.

With global food growth and insecurity, more and more key countries are restricting or even stopping exports.

Reuters summarizes the restrictions announced in recent months.

India - May 2022 - wheat

India has banned wheat exports in a bid to curb rising domestic prices, and world markets have reacted with a rise.

The restriction came just days after Delhi announced it expected exports to record for this year, at more than 10m tonnes.

Indonesia - April 2022 - palm oil

Indonesia, a world leader in palm oil production, imposed a ban on exports of several products based on it in late April to secure local stocks and reduce rising prices.

The measure has led to a jump in vegetable oil prices around the world.

Ukraine - February / March 2022 - grain

Ukraine closed its ports shortly after the Russian invasion began on February 24.

Subsequently, Kyiv banned the export of rye, barley, buckwheat, millet, sugar, salt and meat and introduced export licenses for wheat, corn and sunflower oil.

The country is among the leading exporters of grain and a top exporter of oil.

The suspension of exports has boosted grain prices to record highs.

Other countries - March / April 2022 - grain

Argentina has said it is setting up a mechanism to control wheat prices on the local market and food prices.

Hungary has banned the export of all kinds of grain.

Serbia has limited the quantities of wheat, corn, flour and oil destined for export.

Bulgaria has announced it is increasing grain reserves and could limit exports.

Argentina - December 2021 - corn and wheat

Argentina has limited the amount of corn and wheat that can be exported in an effort to reduce domestic shortages and curb rising prices.

The measure caused corn prices in the United States to rise to their highest level in six and a half years.

Russia - 2021 - grain

Russia introduced special taxes on grain exports in June 2021 in an attempt to curb inflation and stabilize the internal market.

They are determined by the Ministry of Agriculture on a weekly basis, depending on the prices reported by traders.
