Sleep experts have confirmed that what happens to your body when you sleep on your stomach is much worse, compared to other sleeping positions, as your muscles are exposed to great pressure, and this explains the state of tension felt by those who sleep in that position.
According to orthopedic specialist Andrew Pang, “The lower back area is also exposed to pressure during the day through daily activities, and the night period is considered an appropriate period to make the muscles of that area comfortable.”
"Sleeping on your stomach doesn't give those muscles a chance to rest and recover," Pang said. "Not maintaining your spine while sleeping can put stress on different muscles in your body."
If you are accustomed to raising your arms up or tucking them under the pillow while sleeping on your stomach, you are also adding pressure to your shoulder muscles.
Some stomach sleepers bend one of their legs to their side while sleeping, and this is not comfortable for the muscles at all.
How to overcome the problem
Training yourself to lie on your back or side is the best approach you can take when it comes to choosing a different sleeping position.
Some experts recommend changing your stomach sleeping position by adding a pillow under your pelvis, and removing a head pillow.
