In her opening match at these competitions, the 29-year-old native of Odesa (No. 17 WTA) lost to the world's most experienced Japanese player Naomi Osaka (No. 229 WTA).
The match lasted 1 hour 31 minutes and ended with Elina's defeat with a score of
2:6, 6:7
.
It should be noted that this was the seventh personal meeting of tennis players in history.
Svitolina defeated Osaka three times and lost four times.
