Women in Bulgaria receive an average of 12.6 percent lower wages than men, but in a number of economic activities the differences in remuneration are much larger, according to the data of the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research at the National Council of the Bulgarian National Bank.

Over 40 percent of women aged 25 to 34 in Bulgaria have a university degree, compared to 28 percent of men in the same age group. 

Every fourth deputy in the 49th National Assembly is a woman, and politics in our country is perceived as a predominantly "male" profession, the union also noted.



In some spheres, women receive 30 percent lower salaries than men, for example, "Finance and Insurance", said the deputy director of the Institute for Social and Trade Union Studies at the KNSB Violeta Ivanova.

There are also activities, such as construction, in which women are paid 16 percent more than men, because in this industry they are in positions for more qualified personnel such as engineers and designers.

The spheres with the most working women are trade, manufacturing, health and education.

Male employment dominates two of the three highest paid economic activities: "Production and distribution of electricity and heat" and "Creation and dissemination of information". 

Employed women predominate in the lowest paid activities such as "Hotel and restaurant industry". 

KNSB announced that after the local elections in 2023, 13 percent of women mayors, and slightly less than 30 percent of municipal councilors.

In Bulgaria, women in managerial positions are less represented - they are 45 percent.

Women on the boards of the largest companies registered on the stock exchanges in the European Union are on average 34 percent, and in our country - 18 percent.
