The ministers of agriculture of the European Union are discussing mass protests by farmers in Brussels.
At the same time, tires are burning under their windows.
TSN correspondent Yana Slesarchuk explained why the entire agrarian Europe is protesting.
Why are farmers protesting in the EU?
A protest timed to the meeting of EU agriculture ministers continues in Brussels - one of dozens in recent weeks.
In the press, they are already being called a "rural uprising."
From our side of the border, it looks as if only the Poles are protesting against us, and some Hungarians are also happy to join them.
However, the problem of European farmers and European laws is much broader and mostly does not concern Ukraine.
Even Polish farmers, who blocked the German border the day before, tell journalists - it's not about Ukraine at all.
"We are protesting against what the European Union and the European Parliament are offering us with their 'green course'," said Dariusz Wrobel, a protester from Poland.
What is the "green course" and why Russian grain is not prohibited in the EU
In the European Union, there is a common centralized agricultural policy, through which subsidies are distributed.
The Green Course is a series of comprehensive measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which farmers call a killer.
In addition, it is someone else's cheap import.
In addition, there is not enough support from the state, and it is always not enough.
And there are new requirements: to release part of the land for non-agricultural use and to transfer part of the agricultural land to the cultivation of organic products.
At the same time, Russian grain is still not banned in the EU.
"We want Russian grain to finally come under sanctions. Latvia has passed a law that prohibits imports from Russia to Latvia, but it does not apply to transit to other EU states," says Latvian Agriculture Minister Armands Krause.
Farmers' protest
What can be said for sure is that no decision today will stop the protests, because in early June, the elections to the European Parliament, and therefore all the parties that bet on the farmers, will only stir up their discontent at any cost.
