European stock markets closed today's trading session mixed and in search of a clear direction, reports CNBC.

The FTSE 100 index on the London Stock Exchange fell 56.7 points, or 0.73 percent, to 7,662.51.

In Frankfurt, however, the DAX gained 49.69 points, or 0.29 percent, to 17,118.12.

The Paris CAC 40 rose by 16.87 points or 0.22 percent to 7,812.09 points.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 was marginally down 0.2 percent, with major bourses mixed and most sectors in the red. The biggest losers today are the banks, sinking by 1 percent, while the papers of automobile companies rose in price by 1.6 percent, writes BTA.

Stock trading in Tokyo and New York ended in the red

Shares in HSBC plunged 8 percent after the lender announced an 80 percent drop in pre-tax profit for the final quarter of 2023. Glencore also fell, although by only 1 percent.
